Emerson Rocks
When I hang out at the Public Garden, I’m at the intersection of some pretty interesting stuff. The Massachusetts statehouse. Back Bay. Downtown. Suffolk University. And - so far my favorite - Emerson College.
Not to dis anyone from the statehouse or Back Bay or Suffolk U, but Emerson people rock.
I totally get that statehouse people are pulling the load, keeping us safe and organized and within the law. I’m making that part up because I have yet to meet anyone from the statehouse. Probably because you’re all too busy keeping me safe and organized and within the law. Thank you. You know who you are.
If you live in Back Bay, I love you. You’ve served us well in your various capacities and industries that frankly are invisible to me at the moment. Thank you.
Suffolk U people, you’re the statehouse people of the future. You’re preparing to make some very difficult decisions in the future. I, and my children, thank you.
Maybe it’s an artist thing. I myself come from a background in graphic design. I credit that particular direction to the people who made Star Trek and Star Wars. It’s because of that that I got to contribute to a special two-episode presentation of NOVA on PBS.
Emerson people, I’m talking to you now. The Emerson people I’ve met at the Public Garden are really pure. You wear your hearts on your sleeves. You absolutely know that you are vulnerable, and that could very well be your strength. Today you will literally decide to put yourselves in front of the public and live or die based on that decision. And then you will do it again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next.
Emerson people, you have earned my deepest respect. Thank you.
As I go back to the Public Garden and hang the sign that asks, “What’s your biggest challenge right now?” know that I’m drawing my power from you. And know that I’ve got your back.
Emerson College people, how may I serve you?
